Most jobs are stressful, but the construction industry can cause an increased amount of internal stress for crews. Due to the physical labor, supply and demand issues, and the short amount of time for projects, construction workers are voicing their concerns when it comes to their stress levels. Not only does stress affect the workers, but it can also affect their productivity and motivation when it comes to working. Here is how you can manage stress with your work crew:

Listen

One of the best things you can do for your stressed crew is to listen to their concerns. Once they communicate with you about what they are struggling with, you can give them ease and can monitor the rest of the crew’s stress levels. This will also build trust within the business and you can potentially control the stressor.

Be Flexible

When the construction crew is feeling stressed, they often feel overwhelmed. Allow your crew to be flexible with either their schedule, job duties or breaks. This will give them more control over their stress and allow them time to relax and decompress. This can be done in many ways, but try to give employees the opportunity to voice what might be best for them.

Training

If your crew as a whole is experiencing high levels of stress, it might be beneficial to conduct a training or educational program on how to manage stress in the workplace. This can include bringing in a licensed therapist to talk to the group, or simply make a statement on how they can voice their concerns to management. This training can also help managers or construction owners be more aware on how to deal with stressed employees. When the crew knows how to deal with stress and are comfortable with talking to higher ups, more actions can be taken to ensure the productivity and health of workers.

Stress in the construction workplace can be difficult to handle. With the right amount of patience and knowledge, you can help you and your crew to manage stress in a healthy way.
