Gas pipes, sewers, and electrical lines are tricky business when dealing with construction. Even though contractors and surveyors do their best to prepare construction teams for the underground utilities they could have to work around, surprises are all too common.
A lot of the underground utilities you’ll encounter are likely going to be old and inactive. It is common that when larger lines are installed as an area grows in population, the smaller now obsolete pipes are just left there. Today, there is usually very solid data that is regularly updated about what is underground and where it is located. Unfortunately, that was not always the case.
As important as it is to avoid damaging underground utilities, the major concern is that workers do not get inured on the job. Unexpected items like gas lines and water lines can seriously delay a construction project for many reasons. The team may need to figure out a way to work around it without damaging it or disrupting the community, but they will definitely need time to make sure no harm will come to their employees.
So with all this risk, how can you be as prepared as possible?
Plan ahead. Get your hands on every drawing, blueprint, and survey of an area you can find. As your project progresses, continue to monitor the area and have regular meetings with your workers about underground utilities and what to do if they come in contact with any unexpectedly.
Finally, if you come across undocumented lines underground, make note of it so people in the future have access to that information.
