Project Spotlight: Hermann Park

George Hermann gifted 385 acres to the city of Houston in 1914 for a public greenspace after visiting Central Park in New York City. Hermann Park, named after the city’s notable businessman and philanthropist, has remained one of Houston’s most notable landmarks. Jerdon Enterprises prides itself on contributing to the conservation of the park by completing multiple construction projects.

History

In 1922, only eight years after Hermann Park’s inception, Houstonians founded the Hermann Park Conservancy to address growing concerns about the park’s deterioration. With sufficient funding, the conservancy adopted a master plan to renovate the park in 1995. In 2014, the park celebrated its 100-year milestone with the opening of the McGovern Centennial Gardens. The next year, architects created an updated master plan to guide the next 20 years of park improvement projects. Today, the park entertains locals and visitors with a golf course, zoo, outdoor theatre, jogging track, museums and numerous gardens.

Things to Do

As Houston’s most significant green space, Hermann Park offers various things to do for individuals of all ages.

McGovern Centennial Gardens and the Cherie Flores Garden Pavilion

The Centennial Gardens are Hermann Park’s newest attraction. Unveiled in 2014, McGovern Centennial Gardens consists of various themed gardens and a pavilion. With over 50 different species of trees, 350 roses and thousands of other shrubs and perennials, the park immerses visitors in nature.

Miller Outdoor Theatre

The Miller Outdoor Theatre is an open-air theatre that hosts a variety of multicultural events and concerts. Check out the park’s calendar for upcoming performances by the Houston Ballet, Houston Grand Opera and other performers.

Hermann Park Golf Course

The park’s golf course was built in 1922 as the first public golf course to welcome all races. Play a round on the scenic 18-hole golf course before eating at the historic clubhouse.

Houston Zoo

As the park’s most popular destination, the 55-acre zoo hosts 1.4 million guests each year. Located right in the middle of the park, the Houston Zoo is home to over 3,100 exotic animals and is known as one of the best-maintained zoos in the country.
